Chinoy joins the
likes of Jack Ma, Princess Mette-Marit of Norway and Fahd Al Rasheed
Two-Time Academy Award Winning film director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has
been inducted as a board member for the Foundation Board of the Global
Shapers Community (GSC), an
initiative under the World Economic Forum banner. In a
meeting on the 3rd of September at the headquarters of the World
Economic Forum in Geneva, the board inducted Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Khalid
Alkhudair Founder and CEO of a Saudi Social Enterprise, Glowork. GSC is a
network of city-based Hubs, developed
and led by young people, who are exceptional in their potential, achievements
and drive to make a contribution to their communities. Established in 2011, the
community is a not-for-profit foundation that has more than 7000 members
organized across 370 Hubs in 158 countries and territories
worldwide, including Pakistan.
The Global Shapers
Community Foundation Board is spearheaded by some of the world’s greatest minds
including, Klaus Schwab [Founder and Executive Chairman, World Economic Forum],
H.R.G Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, Jack Ma [Executive Chairman, Alibaba
Group], David Rubenstein [Co-Founder and Co-Chief Executive Officer, Carlyle
Group] and Fahd Al Rasheed [Group CEO and Managing Director, King Abdullah
Economic City Saudi Arabia]. Sharmeen is the first Artist to have ever co-chaired
a World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, which she did in 2017 and in 2013 she was
honored by the Forum with a Crystal award.

Sharmeen brings to
the Foundation Board formidable experience having worked in over twelve
countries around the world. She is currently serving on two international boards,
as a Trustee, on the board of Smith College in the United States as well as on
the board of the Asian University for Women in Bangladesh.
With the support of
Global Shapers Community, Sharmeen is geared to create an even larger positive
impact on the world stage. The agile, responsive, and inspiring solutions
presented by the GSC are aiding in shaping the future of cities around the
world. The Global Shapers Community exists to strengthen the voice of
youth locally and globally. Its Hubs
undertake projects that address issues including education, unemployment, the
environment and sustainability. Having a Pakistani member in the forum is
a significant boost for the country and its people.
HBO Films will be
launching Sharmeen’s latest venture “Student Athelete” on October 2nd
in North America. The film is produced by Baskeball star LaBron James. The film
hopes to influence legislation around the the rights of student athletes in
America. Sharmeen’s domestic venture 3 Bahadur will also be releasing its final
film as part of the trilogy “Rise of the Warriors” in December 2018 across
Pakistan.
In 2012, Time Magazine included Sharmeen in their annual list of the
100 most influential people in the world. In 2013, the Canadian government
awarded Sharmeen a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her work in the
field of documentary films and the World Economic Forum honored her with a
Crystal Award at their annual summit in Davos. She has also been awarded the
Hilal-e-Imtiaz by the government of Pakistan – the country’s second highest
civilian honor.
